By, Amber K Diablo Cody, a devoted blogger from Chicago Illinois, was discovered in 2004 by Mason Novick as he perused the internet, he had noticed Cody’s unique voice and outstanding talent for writing. “Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper,” was dripping with voice and character of the young non-shameful woman. When Novick asked her to publish ‘Candy Girl’ he had also requested any ideas for a film. Diablo immediately sent him a completed screenplay called ‘Juno.’
Juno is a comedy about growing up and the bumps along the way. Diablo Cody wanted to tell a dark comedy. She says, “I asked myself, what’s a story that’s never been told?” And that’s when it hit her, Cody would write the perspective of a pregnant teenager with out it becoming melodramatic. Simply what Juno deals with and how she feels of the situation. The character Juno is much like Diablo Cody however, Cody believes Juno is much more tough and self aware than she was at Juno’s age. Cody demonstrates her relationship with her best friend from high school in the film as well. A boy, whom Bleaker is based off of, was one Cody admits today, as regretfully taken advantage of by her as Juno does to Bleaker in the film.
Diablo Cody, "I have never been an ambitious person and my participation in this industry is a fluke, but only male writers can afford to be coy and self-depricating."
Diablo Cody is quite a humble nerd who merely wants to write and keep on writing. She quotes, “stripping toughened my hide, but exposing myself as a writer has been a lot more brutal.” The writing business is most definitely cut throat but with determination and passion one can succeed their goals. As Diablo Cody did, her screenplay Juno won 44 awards including from 2008, an Oscar for best screenplay written for the screen, a Critics Choice Award for best writer, an Online Film Critics Society Award [OFCS] for Original Screenplay, and a Writers Guild Award [WGA] for the best Original Screenplay. Cody's writing has distinct voice. It is the personality of her characters and humorously bizarre dialogue that earns her a spot among the best of screenwriters.
Diablo Cody has said that despite her achievement, “I have never been an ambitious person and my participation in this industry is a fluke, but only male writers can afford to be coy and self-deprecating.”
When you look at most of the screenwriters who have created masterpieces of film, receiving countless awards for their effort, you will notice that most of these people are males. It has always been difficult for women to be considered equal in the eyes of the male society and so it is not far fetched to believe it is the same for writing. The quote by Diablo Cody, demonstrates that concept. It is easier for a man to degrade his writing than it is a woman because he has already demonstrated his superiority by being well, simply by being male. Women need that extra confidence that they can only find in themselves. It's the voice that tells them they can succeed, that their writing is worth reading.
Diablo Cody is an outstanding screenwriter with an unusual story. But that goes to show you that anything is possible. You just need patience and determination. Some tips to take from Cody would be:
-write a story that noone has ever told before
-accept your talent, don't doubt yourself
-keep an open mind
-be your unique self.
